Israelites (20:14–16). This has striking similarities to other creedal statements in the Old Testament, especially Deuteronomy 26:5–11. Yet the emphasis here is less on what YHWH has done and more on the troubles that Israel has endured. Rhetorically, the purpose is to rouse the sympathy of the Edomites for their “brother” Israel and to respond generously.
